Ellsworth Community School District has announced school will be closed Monday, Jan. 22 due to a predicted a snowstorm. The Ellsworth Elementary Open House, scheduled for Monday night, Jan. 22 has been postponed. A new date will be announced. Other area schools who have cancelled school, as of 8 p.m. Sunday night, include Hastings, Goodhue and Red Wing.
The sixth annual Special Olympics basketball tournament is scheduled for Jan. 28. The opening ceremonies will be held 10:45 a.m. in the West Gym at the Baldwin-Woodville High School. Games start on the hour in the four gyms between Greenfield and the high school.
A group of 17 parishioners from St. Ambrose of Woodbury visited the church's Sister Parish Jan. 2-9 in Esmeralda, Camaguey, Cuba. It was the third trip to Cuba and the largest group yet. Parishioners experienced a youth group Nativity skit along with Cuban singing and dancing. The group also spent time visiting with the sick, helping tear down a hurricane-damaged church building and playing baseball with teens and university students home for the holidays.
MADISON — U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue recently announced the individuals who will serve on the Wisconsin USDA Farm Service Agency state committee. The state committee is responsible for the oversight of farm programs and county committee operations, resolving appeals from the agriculture community, and helping to keep producers informed about FSA programs. Dog walker finds snowmobiler dead 30 miles north of Minneapolis EAST BETHEL, Minn. - A dog walker spotted the remains Thursday, Jan. 18 of an East Bethel, Minn. man apparently killed in a snowmobile crash, investigators said. East Bethel is approximately 30 miles north of Minneapolis. The body had been there at least overnight, according to the Anoka County sheriff's office.
Each March the University of Wisconsin-River Falls works with the community to raise funds through the Bowls for Hope event where proceeds raised help a worthy organization make a difference in the St. Croix Valley. This year, Family Resource Center St. Croix Valley has been selected as the benefiting organization. Bowls for Hope 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, in the Riverview Ballroom of the University Center at UW-River Falls.
MADISON — Registration is open for Farm and Rural Lobby Day on Feb. 21 in Madison. The event is hosted by Wisconsin Farmers Union. WFU President Darin Von Ruden urged WFU members from all corners of the state to make the trip to Madison. "Decisions that are made at the Capitol have a tremendous impact on our lives in rural Wisconsin. Farm and Rural Lobby Day is a chance to work together to strengthen the voices of family farmers and our rural communities," Von Ruden said.
Pawlenty says he won't run against Smith for U.S. Senate ST. PAUL — Former Republican Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty will not run for the U.S. Senate in November. Pawlenty, who has been courted by numerous donors and influential Republicans to run for the seat formerly held by Al Franken, made his announcement Tuesday on the Fox Business Network.
The Midwest Food Products Association is offering up to six $1,500 scholarships to undergraduate students who are majoring in agriculture or food science and attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison, UW-Platteville or UW-River Falls for the 2018-19 academic year. "MWFPA recognizes the vital role played by agriculture and the food processing industry in the Midwest economy," MWFPA president Nick George said. "These scholarships help students to continue their education and support the growth of these two major industries."
